Better Off Friends - Elizabeth Eulberg

Summary from Goodreads:

For Macallan and Levi, it was friends at first sight. Everyone says guys and girls can’t be just friends, but these two are. They hang out after school, share tons of inside jokes, their families are super close, and Levi even starts dating one of Macallan’s friends. They are platonic and happy that way.

Eventually they realize they’re best friends — which wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t keep getting in each other’s way. Guys won’t ask Macallan out because they think she’s with Levi, and Levi spends too much time joking around with Macallan, and maybe not enough time with his date. They can’t help but wonder . . . are they more than friends or are they better off without making it even more complicated?

From romantic comedy superstar Elizabeth Eulberg comes a fresh, fun examination of a question for the ages: Can guys and girls ever really be just friends? Or are they always one fight away from not speaking again — and one kiss away from true love?

I waited way too long to write this review so unfortunately my copy from Netgalley has expired :( But I will do my best to review what I remember... When I first started Better Off Friends, I had a hard time getting emotionally involved. It was pretty lackluster and I was hoping for more. I set the book down and then picked it up again when I was ready and that is when I finally started to kind of like it. I only liked it enough to give it three stars but when I think about the book, I feel blah about it. So my rating isn't exact and who knows, maybe I need to do a re-read. I think the reason why I didn't fully like/love it is because of the huge span of time it covers! I don't care to be reading about these two kids and their time in 7th or 8th grade. I like high school romance stories so it felt really long and it dragged on too much. To me, Better Off Friends seems pretty realistic which is probably why I didn't like it as much either. I am a fan of insta-love so this was pretty boring for me and not very exciting. I did like the chapter separators that featured Macallan and Levi texting each other because we get to see their banter which is always my favorite in books! And I liked that the chapters were told in alternating POVs but I just couldn't connect. I haven't read anything else by Elizabeth Eulberg yet and after this one, I'm not really in a rush to do so.

Rating: 7/10

  1. I feel like I would have a similar experience with this book as you did. I've never been very interesting in reading this one, and I'm not a fan of reading about younger characters (even if they grow older in the book). This just doesn't seem like a must read. I've read The Lonely Hearts Club by this author, but I didn't love it. So, I don't blame you for not rushing to read her other books. Great review!
